Makeup and Beauty Blogging 101

Hi Beautiful!

Just in the past two weeks I have been approached by 5 separate people asking similar questions about how to start blogging and creating a successful beauty page on Instagram. I am always happy to help the best I can because I was in the same situation not too long ago. Hence, I wanted to share some tips and tricks that I wish I knew when I first started blogging.

To start lets just get this out of the way. There are 3 reasons that why people usually want to start beauty blogging, and depending on your reasoning there are different approaches you should take. Most people will have one of the three motives or even a combination of the three. Here are some tips to help you be successful depending on your motive.

1) You are a professional and hope to gain clients
If you want to be a professional make sure you keep your page professional. Get a certification, post client images. Give tip and tricks to your followers. Your blog should be an additional way for you to market yourself.

2) You have a love for makeup and beauty products that you want to share
Being a part of the beauty community is so rewarding. Follow trends and post about things people are interested in. Give opinions on products you’ve used. Post pictures of your favorite products.

3) You want to get “InstaFamous”
One of the most important things you can do is to be engaging. Like and comment on other peoples post. Repost other people pictures and use relevant hashtags. Write down timing of post that did the best, and try to follow a schedule posting at the time of day when you receive the most engagement.

Now here are some of the topics I get the most questions on.

Creating a Page on Instagram

1) Naming your Page
With new beauty pages popping up every day, it is hard to come up with something original. I wanted my blogging handle to be something simple and something that I can use across all platforms. Since I knew I mostly wanted to focus it on makeup, I thought MakeupBySehar was easy enough to remember and use.

2) Putting up content
When you first start blogging, it is important to have initial 6-8 high quality posts. These post give your new followers a preview of what to expect. How can you expect someone to follow you from 1-2 posts? Before I even created my Instagram, I had put aside 10 posts that I thought represented me and the page I wanted to create. This helped me gain initial following from family and friends and from people that shared a similar interest.

3) Writing a Bio
Make sure you have a complete bio along with a profile image. Make it personalized and fun. You can also add emojis and hashtags to some flair.

How to post better pictures

1) Lighting
This is probably one of the most important things. Nobody wants to see pictures from the dark. Poor lighting pictures are not only hard to look at, but they also affect the quality of the image. This was always an issue for me since the only time I had to work on my blog was at night time and there was no sunlight. Pictures in indirect sunlight are the ones that are most appealing, but if you have the same issue I do, investing in a ring light might pay off. I purchased the Neewer 18″ ring light from Amazon. I wish I bought the one with a dimmer since it is really bright and it washes out the colors sometimes. Honestly, it isn’t as sturdy as I would like it to be, but it gets the job done.

2) Watermarking
It is so important to watermark your pictures these days. I’ve had other bloggers use my images as their own because I didn’t watermark it. Also, if it is ever re-posted the credit comes back to you.

3) Editing Apps
I take pictures with my phone and sometimes the quality isn’t there or I want to change something. These days editing apps are so essential. I have an Android phone and some of my favorites to use is: Layout, No Crop, Photo Editor and Facetune.

How to gain more Likes/Followers

1) Be consistent with posts
It is important to consistently post new content. You don’t have to post every day, but when you do, make sure that it is related and high quality. Don’t post pictures just for the sake of posting pictures, because you’re most likely going to delete them later anyways.

2) Market yourself
Don’t be afraid to post on your personal social media and ask your friends and family for support. Some of my biggest supporters include my best friends, and boyfriend and I am truly grateful for that. I’ve also gotten a tone of referrals from this.

3) Tagging and Hashtags
When you are a new blogger, your primary concern is always to get your work noticed. How do you do that? By using hashtags that are relevant to your content. Also, don’t be afraid to tag people in your pictures! It helps them notice the pictures along with their followers.

4) Support other bloggers
This is probably one of the most important tip I could give. Support other people’s work and in turn they will support you too. It is NOT a competition. No one is winning. I have met some really great people from Instagram from just a single like or follow. Following, likes, and comments don’t go unnoticed, especially in a smaller account.

5) Host Giveaways
This is probably one of the most known fact. Hosting a giveaway is probably the easiest way to get recognition. It is basically getting the followers to market your page for you.

Honestly, I wanted to start blogging when I was in my second year of university, but I knew that I couldn’t dedicate the time I wanted then so, I waited almost 4 years after to when I knew I could finally devote time to it and give it my 120%. I did almost 3 months of research, read numerous articles, followed bloggers patterns to see what made them successful and got my makeup certification because I wanted to be a professional, and not just another person who likes makeup.

It is important to remember that success doesn’t come over night. You have to work for it. Famous beauty bloggers like NikkiTutorials, DressYourface and HudaBeauty took YEARS to get to where they are now. It didn’t happen overnight. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get as many likes or followers as you like, just work harder. Don’t get competitive and bitter if someone else is getting more recognition, stay humble. Focus on bettering yourself and success will come along the way.

I hope this was helpful! Comment below with some of your tips!
